 As in antiquity the decoration, the finish of the ornamentation of seagoing vessels and galleys gave the ship it's political identity. This decoration had a protective function as did the figurehead. Under Louis XIV, the warships were ornately decorated show off the beauty of the sculpture and the skill of the sculptor. This reflected the richness of the kingdom and the magnificence of the King, the decoration often in the style of mythical heros represented power. The figurehead later changed to go with the name of the ship.
